The Rise of the Hips

If you have noticed over the years that fashion tends to repeat itself every 20 years or so, but each designer tends to put their own twist on it. While working in retail, I see these trends come back all the time. At New York and Company the big trend throughout our clothing and accessories is velvet and chokers. Velvet suits, velvet bags, even velvet chokers. NYCO is targeted towards more so of the business casual and 25+ crowd, so they don’t typically experiment much. But at Urban Outfitters, we’ve gotten some off the wall trends coming back. Of course we have the velvet and the chokers, but there are certain stand out trends from the 70s and 80s and 90s that are in store. Last week someone returned not one, but two orange velvet jumpsuits – very 70s. One morning we had a meeting and we had to build and outfit that was monochromatic – 80s. And of course, a tribute to Britney and Justin in the their denim on denim – yes you have it folks 90s denim trend is back.

But one thing that I recently noticed, after following my girl crush Niykee Heaton, is that the hip level on panties is slowly moving back to the high-waisted hipsters. The ones Calvin Klein or Tommy Hilfiger use to have. Recently, I received a Victoria Secret gift card for Christmas and decided to use it on the semi-annual sale. I went onto the website and wanted to look for some high rise/waisted hipsters, I mean most of the pants i wear are high-waisted anyways, but literally 90% of them were sold out in my size. So I ended up getting one high-waisted hipster, one mid-rise cheeky, one shortie, and one cheeky. They were all different hip heights on the model so I’m excited to see that for myself, and hopefully find more of them to purchase as well, or just fine the ones Niykee always wears and that will suffice.
